WEB MEDIA PROJECT 1

DCT5.016 Web Media 1

1   Project One (40%) Search and Explore

There is a saying at the moment that if you’re not on the web, then you’re not anywhere. Designers live, work and breathe on the Internet, and it is vital to have a recognizable online presence. And it’s not just “web designers” but graphic designers, visual artists, illustrators, and musicians – in fact any type of creative person who wants access to the biggest market should be online.

The quickest way to get online is to create a blog. You will use your blog to document your journey and continue to use it as your online visual diary for project 2. I expect you to become addicted to blogging and sharing online!

The topic for your blog? You will be creating a variety of smaller experiments as you learn about various web technologies.

Weekly posts to your blog are expected, and you shall document and comment on your work, as well as the work of others. Discussion is encouraged. Each week you will be expected to research, experiment with, and blog about one or more topics:

Post 1: History of the web, blogging setup
Post 2: How the web works, HTML intro, Social Media intro
Post 3: Markup structure, Twitter feed
Post 4: CSS, HTML links
Post 5: Interface design
Post 6: Image optimization
Post 7: Simple menu, videos
Post 8: Reflection on what I have learned

Guidelines:

-      Minimum of 8 blog posts – more is better!
-      Number of pages: min = 2, max = 5.
-      Use tools and techniques taught in class, including the blogging platform specified by your tutor.
-      Since you are a creative individual, find ways to personalize your blog.
-      Aim for a professional look that will carry over into your second project.
-      Include examples of your work. (Recent work only please)
-      Include pieces that inspire you.
-      Must be linked to at least 3 of your social media accounts.
-      Must use at least 2 gadgets/widgets.
-      You must comment on other students’ blogs and enable commenting on your own blog.
-      All work to be original and created during this class. Exceptions include any posts that are additional to the 8 you are making for this project. Anything that is being marked must be 100% your own work, in your own words. If you use quotes these will be accepted only with correct referencing to the source.

Your finished blog will be presented to the class in a 5 minute critique.

Note: administrator rights for your blog will need to be surrendered to your tutor for the duration of grading. Admin rights will be returned to you via email.

Due Date 18/9/13 (Wednesday)
